Red Wine? Yes please!
Resveratrol, a plant compound found in grapes, blueberries, and red wine, has proven to have anti-aging powers. According to the Huffington Post a recent study published in the journal Cell Metabolism found resveratrol does “prolong lifespan.” Researchers at the National Institute of Health and the Glenn Foundation for Medical Research found that: “resveratrol’s anti-aging effects only works when a specific gene is present, namely SIRT1. In other words, no SIRT1, no anti-aging effects — which means that resveratrol’s influence on the gene is significant. Consequently, the study now reinforces the claim that resveratrol can prolong lifespan and health-span by boosting the activity of mitochondria, the cell’s energy supplier.” i09 reports. According to The Los Angeles Times: “The SIRT1 gene, one of a family of genes, the Sirtuins, is believed to control the good function and longevity of cells and, in turn, of their host.”
Bottom line, studies point to the benefits of resveratrol, found in red grapes and blueberries, as an anti-aging strategy. However, excess consumption of alcohol, as in wine, can strongly dimish the positive effect of of your evening’s toast. So one glass of red wine is more than enough, or grapes and blueberries that would be just as good!
Exercising Keeps Your Cells Young
A study conducted in Germany compared sedentary people with runners of the same age and found that “middle-aged athletes looked much younger than sedentary control subjects of the same age.’’ The New York Times. As the article quotes:
“Exercise, Dr. Werner says, at the molecular level has an anti-aging effect.’’
Alpha-Carotene found in Orange Fruits and Veggies Reduces Risk of Cancer and Heart Disease
Orange as in pumpkin, carrots and squash, the foods richest in this phytonutrient. According to Los Angeles Times, people whose blood levels measured highest for alpha-carotene were least likely to die of cancer, cardiovascular disease, or indeed of any cause, during an 18-year period.
Have SEX!
Yes, you read that right, Anti-aging specialist Dr. Eric Braverman quoted by The Doctors TV recommends it like this:
“Have sex at least two times a week to reboot the brain. Sex is one of the few activities that both excites and relaxes the brain at the same time, which is the key to the reboot process.”
Make Sure You Add Some Omega-3 To Your Daily Diet
Omega-3 is a healthy and essential source of fat found in krill oil, foods rich in this fatty acid may reduce your risk of Alzheimer’s.
Build Habits That Keep Your Brain Working Even As You Age
Physical exercise is beneficial to your cognitive function, and the use of the computers helps avoid memory loss, a study showed that combined the prevention of memory loss is greater:
“We found there was indeed a synergistic action between computer activities and physical exercise,” says Dr. Geda, referring to the process wherein two elements create a result not possible with either on its own.
Pets Ease Stress and Lower Blood Pressure
Owning a cat could reduce your risk of a heart attack by nearly one third, researchers told delegates of the American Stroke Association’s International Stroke Conference. Although some Drs have said this may could prove opposite in elderly people, where caring for a pet may actually increase the level of stress, however before you reach a stage where the added stress is unmanageable caring for a pet may help you relax, and why not, smile more often!
Reduce Sugar Intake
In a study published by UCSF researchers confirmed that sugar “changes metabolism, raises blood pressure, critically alters the signaling of hormones and causes significant damage to the liver“.
