Do you want to know the biggest, most well-kept secret for gorgeous, youthful-looking skin?
Regardless of your age, you must have a skincare routine. But while your skin looks great in your 20s, it’s important to create and follow these routines, so that your skin will remain healthy, avoid wrinkles, scaring and unwanted spots. In preparation for a lifetime of radiance and beauty, here are our top 10 tips for beautiful looking skin. These might be things we all feel we know, but they must ALL be part of your daily routine.
1. Use foaming cleanser
Cleanse your face every day, preferably twice a day! Regular soap isn’t good for your skin, use a good foaming cleanser adequate for your skin type. Something simple is great, so you won’t overdo it!
2. Apply lightweight moisturizer daily
When you are in your 20s, you don’t need a heavy moisturizer. You need something that is very light and airy. Most of us start to lose moisture in our skin in our 20s, so it’s important to start trying to find a moisturizer that works for you, and keep trying until you find one you love. If possible, find one with a built-in SPF protection.
3. Protect your face, neck and chest from the sun
Even if the sun is not out you should still protect your chest, neck and face from it. SPF creams and lotions are essential. This way, you will protect your skin and keep it looking as beautiful as it does in your 20s! No matter how old are you, this is skincare routine that you should certainly follow, a lifetime of exposure to the sun can kill you, and it will definitely add wrinkles, sun spots, and a truly terrible leather-like texture to your skin. If you’re serious about skin care in your 20s, you’ll avoid the sun without sunscreen or sunblock, despite what your friends decide to do. Then, when you’re 40, and still look 30, while they look 50, you’ll be so glad you did! “Put the same moisturizer on the sides of your neck and chest that you use on your face. You will thank yourself later, since the sun hits here hard, and the neck and chest skin doesn’t protect itself as well as the face,” says Dr. Jessica Krant, board-certified dermatologist, founder of Art of Dermatology.
4. Eat healthy and drink enough water
Your body is what you eat, skin needs antioxidants and other nutrients from food to stay healthy and happy. So keep your body and skin healthy by eating right and enough. And never forget to carry your water bottle around to make sure you’re staying hydrated daily. Again, since your skin may start losing moisture now that you’re in your 20s, it’s important to stay hydrated. Truly, it’s important to stay hydrated anyway, but who wants skin that looks like it’s thirsty, even when it’s not? Your diet habits will show themselves on your pretty face: eat well, and you’ll have gorgeous skin; eat poorly, and your chips-and-candy diet will show, too!
5. Get your beauty sleep
Your part of skin care in your 20s means getting your beauty sleep. Getting your 8 hours will keep puffy, tired eyes at bay, giving you a youthful, glowing appearance. Make sure you get plenty of sleep. “Get your beauty sleep,” advises Beverly Hills dermatologist Dr. Stuart H. Kaplan, “The skin is the body’s largest organ. Just as your brain and heart need sleep to recharge and reboot, so does your skin.”
6. Never sleep in your makeup
One of the most important skincare routines you should follow is never sleep in your makeup. Your skin uses the time you’re sleeping to renew itself, and if you’re wearing makeup while your skin is trying to do this, it’ll cause blemishes and dry, dull skin because makeup clogs up your pores. Always wash your face before going to bed and you will save your skin from breakouts and help it look amazing.
7. Use a nightly serum
Before bed, gently wash away your makeup and be sure to use a night-time moisturizer also known as nightly serum to help moisturize skin while you sleep. That way when you get up the next morning your face will be refreshed.
8. Never pick on or pop pimples
Leave pimples alone, or they might scar, stain or infect. Instead, apply anti-acne or anti-blemish products cream, but don’t over treat them either! Use a witch hazel compress and resist picking at it, and it’ll fade on its own. If you have to, cover it with a thin layer of green-tinted concealer (the green negates the red blemish) and a light dusting of powder, and ignore it. Over-treating the blemish will just irritate your skin, and picking it will cause the oil to spread, and leave you with a nasty scab that’s a lot harder to conceal than a tiny little pimple.
9. Don’t over-exfoliate
Exfoliate no more than once a week, because this gives the baby-new skin cells a chance to grow, and your skin time to replenish and rehydrate. Over-exfoliation can cause wrinkles, dry skin, and even scarring, if you over exfoliate you may be scrubbing away skin cells that are trying to heal and grow right.
Finally, make sure you don’t overdo your routine, . Don’t apply too much cream on your skin, use only lightweight products. Don’t stay out in the sun too long or tan without covering your face well.
10. Don’t Smoke
Your dermatologist can confirm this important advice. It robs your skin of vital moisture and nutrients, adding years to the look and feel of your skin. Do you really need another reason to quit?
