Age and Sun Spot FAQ

What are age spots and what causes them?

Age spots are tan or brown spots that are typically found on sun-exposed areas. Although harmless, people with age spots may be at a higher risk of developing skin cancer. Age spots typically appear at middle-age. Light pigmented skin types and people with a propensity for freckles and sunburn typically get age spots more than other skin types. However, age spots can occur with any skin type.  Age spots are collection of melanin that have accumulated or grouped in a particular area of the epidermis. Age spots range in size from barely visible to dime-sized. They increase with age and sun exposure.

What do they look like?

Age spots are flat, brown spots on the skin surface. They are typically round with irregular borders. Over time, they may darken and increase in size. However, after a period of time, they reach a steady state.

How are they treated?

At Lasair, age spots are typically treated with laser treatments. The KTP and Fraxel laser treatments are highly effective for reducing or removing age spots. These laser treatments have been proven to be safe and effective for age spots. Additionally, some patients can be treated with chemical peels. There are a variety of peels from very mild to aggressive chemical peels. Before treatment, Lasair medical providers will evaluate your skin type and age spots before recommending the best procedure. A single treatment or a combination treatment program may be recommended for optimum results.
