 How does Laser Hair Removal Work?

When human hair follicles are subjected to laser energy, the melanin in the hair follicles absorbs the energy and thermally destroys the hair follicles, leaving it unable to produce hair. Since hair is continuously turning over, growth cycles are starting and stopping at different times. Therefore laser hair removal sessions are required before all the follicles are destroyed. Laser hair removal can be used as a permanent hair reduction process, and for ingrown hairs.

 What hair colors does it work on?

Nearly everyone is a candidate for hair removal except people with blond hair. The best candidates are dark haired people with light colored skin. However, dark skinned people are very treatable. Men and women are equally suitable for treatments. 

 How many treatments does it take?

Patients can expect to see results in a couple of weeks after the first treatment. Because hair grows in cycles and because lasers only work on early growth hair, multiple treatments are required. Patients typically experience major hair loss after a few treatments and over 90% loss in 6-8 treatments. Some patients desire to only thin their hair. For example, men often desire an 80% reduction on their backs but only a 30-40% reduction on their chest and arms.  Is it really permanent?

When the laser effectively destroys the hair follicle, they are permanently disabled. Therefore, the hair does not grow back. However, because hair grows in cycles, all the follicles in the area must be destroyed to get complete permanent hair removal. That is why it takes multiple sessions to permanently remove all hair. 

Does it hurt?

Lasair is very sensitive to people’s comfort during treatment. Most people experience a heat sensation during treatment. Topical anesthesia can be administered to increase comfort although many patients treat without it. 

 Is there any downtime?

Patient can resume normal activities immediately after treatment. However, treated areas need to be protected from the sun using a quality sunscreen or clothing.
