In the last few years it has become very common and accepted to add multivitamins and other nutritional supplements to our daily diets, which can be beneficial to our health if used appropriately. The only thing we need to be aware of is about their quality, as there a lot of brands in the market but not all them will supply what it says on the label. In regards to nutritional supplements, best value doesn´t necessarily mean the best quality.

Get to know the supplement grades

As a consumer you have the right to know that the grade, form, purity, bio-availability and third party verification contribute to the effectiveness of the product you are buying.

Nutritional supplements are commonly divided in three different categories: pharmaceutical or medical grade, food grade and feed or agricultural grade.

Pharmaceutical grade

To put it simply, this grade means that the product has been manufactured under Good Manufacturing Practices, or GMP. It is the highest quality grade of vitamins, meaning the purity, dissolution and absorption meet the highest regulatory standards verified by an outside party, including training, equipment, raw materials and facilities. Processing and manufacturing can be traced back to the date, time, lot number, and equipment used. They are mostly available through licensed physicians or in specialty vitamin shops.

Food Grade

These type of supplements may or may not follow good manufacturing practices and they might not always be tested for absorption, dissolution or purity. Additionally, these supplements do not always have the same concentrations of active ingredients as what is listed on the label. You can buy them over the counter in most drug or grocery stores and are relatively cheap.

Feed Grade

These supplements are for veterinary use and are not intended for humans. The production standards are set for animal consumption.
