We all need it from time to time
Everyone has different levels of stress, and everyone manages it differently as well. That is precisely the key point, since the way you handle stress makes a big difference in how you feel and how you behave.
If you have good stress-managing skills it could even be beneficial for your health; but if you are not coping well, it can certainly take a big toll on your blood pressure, blood sugar level and your general wellbeing. Besides, your skin and appearance suffer as well, since stress makes you look older, tired, upset all the time and without glow.
Here are some calming strategies to keep in mind for when they are needed the most:
Focus on your breathing
Focusing on your breath eases your body’s urgeto flee or fight under pressing or fearsome circumstances, and it pulls your attention away from negative thoughts. Sit comfortably in a quiet place, breathe in slowly through your nose, letting your chest and lower belly rise and your abdomen expand. Breathe out just as slowly, repeating a word or phrase that helps you relax. Try this for at least 10 minutes for greater results.
Go outdoors and exercise
Spending time outdoors is linked to better well-being. Nature helps you to relax and get physically active, as you can go walking or hiking. Doing regular exercise is also great to manage stress, as it improves your mood, clears your head and lets you take a break from whatever is stressing you out.
Go easy on yourself
We all have a constant stream of thoughts running through our heads, and sometimes what we think of ourselves isn’t so nice. Try to be gentle with yourself and avoid self-destructing thoughts while working out a solution.
Vent your emotions safely
We all need to vent at some point. Whether you prefer to write down your feelings or tell a non-judgmental friend, is entirely up to you. Just remember to do so with the intention of letting go whatever is tormenting you, and not to fall into a self-pity game of torture. Venting pure emotion energy is one of the best things you can do to release stress: allow yourself to cry if you are sad, acknowledge the feeling of fear in your body or scream in a thick pillow or hit it if you are angry; and then let go and move on. Appropriate venting techniques will help you be happy again and avoid hurting others with your emotions.
