Fraxel FAQ

Who is a candidate for Fraxel?
Anyone that is suffering from skin damage is a potential candidate for Fraxel. In particular, people with wrinkles near the eyes, acne scars, stretch marks, or age spots are candidates. Fraxel is a great way to regain clear and radiant skin. Therefore, if your skin has taken on a “dull tone,” you are probably a good candidate.

How does Fraxel Work?

Fraxel Laser Treatment produces thousands of tiny but deep columns of treatment in your skin, known as microthermal treatment zones.  This treatment eliminates old epidermal pigmented cells.  It also penetrates deep into the dermis.  Jus as important, though, are the areas of skin the Fraxel laser leaves untouched.  Tor every mocrothermal zone the laser targets and treats intensively, it leaves the surrounding tissue unaffected and intact.  This “fractional” treatment allows the skin to heal much faster than if the entire area were treated at once, using the body’s natural healing process to create new, healthy tighter tissue to replace skin imperfections.  (Reproduced from Fraxel brochure)

What is the Recovery from Fraxel?
There is typically no downtime with Fraxel. Patients receiving Fraxel typically will have minor swelling and redness similar to sunburn. Post treatment care is similar to a sunburn. Patients should stay out of the sun and wear sunscreen or protective clothing.  They should keep the treated area moisturized.

When will I see results?
Some patients see results very shortly after treatment. However, because the healing process produces the results, your optimum results will be in 2-3 months.  Shortly after treatment, the skin will “bronze” as the dermis starts to heal. Skin cells with then start to slough off and the skin repairs itself, resulting in new collagen development resulting in new, smooth skin.

Is Fraxel FDA approved?
The Fraxel treatment has received FDA-clearance for treatment of wrinkles around the eyes, age and sun spots, acne scars and surgical scars, skin resurfacing and melasma.

What side-effects can I expect after treatment and how long will they last?
There will be some degree of redness and swelling. The degree of redness and swelling will depend upon how aggressive your provider treats you.  Other temporary side-effects include minor itching, dry skin or peeling.
